The Importance of Gay Marriage and Proposition 8

Did you know that from November 8, 2008 to August 4, 2010 82.9 million people were not able to marry? Gay marriage was a hard fought battle which was won only 7 years ago. There are a few things that make this matter so important. First, the process of getting proposition 8 into and out of effect and its effect on people. Second, the differences and similarities between Proposition 22 and Proposition 8. Lastly, why this is still relevant today and it’s effect on the U.S population. So why was it made? Prop 22 and prop 8 are as similar as they are different because of a few characteristics each proposition has. One difference that many people get mixed up is that prop 22 came before prop 8 because prop 22 was first to take away the right for gay couples to marry. March 7, 2000 was when prop 22 was voted into effect with 61.2% of voters in favor of it. But on May 15, 2008 it was overturned by the California Supreme Court with a 4-3 final decision and then prop 8 was born with the same effect as 22 but what made prop 8 different was that prop 8 amended the California Constitution which means that it has a bigger and stronger effect on court laws. This makes it harder to overturn prop 8 than prop 22 which was only a state statute. In North Carolina there was a bill that was going to outlaw gay marriage on April 11 of this year but was gratefully not passed. But this action is evidence that shows that there are still a lot of people that don’t believe in same-sex marriage. Texas was also looking into a bill of this manner also but it never made it into election. It never got passed because outlawing marriage is not civil at all and it goes against Fourteenth amendment which is what Judge Vaughn Walker proved in 2010. But just because the bills didn't get passed now doesn't mean that other states won't try to pass a bill of the same manner so there is still a chance that the dark era of 2000 to 2010 might return to modern times. If these times do return then this will cause a huge effect on the U.S population as more and more people become a part of the LGBTQ community every day. The two propositions are both are social injustices and are unfair laws that are made only for hate against a certain group of people that think a little bit differently than most people which relates to a lot of other constant problems with our world that were present today, yesterday, and
