Pros And Cons Of Abolishing The Police Force

Daunting news regarding the police force has been brought up for many years. Despite thwarted attempts to abolish/defund the police, I can’t entirely agree with the idea. The appearance of police brutality over the years has created fear among citizens and caused an uproar. It may seem that the mistakes that are happening over and over again would have taught the police to right their wrongs, but it has not transpired. They have misused their power and lost the trust of many people when needing protection. As fear and anger ensue, they believe getting rid of or putting aside the police force is proper. Although Mychal Denzel Smith states that people should replace the police with “full social, economic, and political equality” (Smith, 2015), we still need them. The loss of the police force would not do any good to society. It would be dangerous without the help of any protection. Defunding or abolishing the police would prevent officers from improving and understanding the limits. Even though police officers are human beings with fears, they should practice putting away their biases or stereotypes. Training and development should be strongly encouraged and applied yearly for better performances. Checking in regularly on their mental health can also benefit them in ensuring their safety and those around them. Also, implementing moral ethics, policies, and exposure to different ethnicities could build stronger foundations. As various methods could be valuable, holding officers accountable for their actions is essential. Accountability should help realize the wrongdoings and pay by whatever means necessary to learn and understand their actions.
