Abortion is defined as terminating a pregnancy before the fetus has been born. Abortion has been and still is very controversial and has had an increasing amount of cases all over the world. In 2000 there were over one million abortions in the United States (Harper, et al, 501). Abortion is one of the most common procedures women undergo. According to the current abortion rates about thirty percent of women will have an abortion by the age of forty-five (Jones and Kavanaugh, 2011). Most abortions are attributed to unplanned pregnancies. In 2001 half of the 6.4 million pregnancies were not planned and half of this number resulted in having an abortion (Jones and Kavanaugh, 2011). Starting off with the pros, many women face hard times in life and having a baby would not make sense during that time period of their life. Although there is the option for adoption many women can find it hard to give up their child regardless if they know they can not keep it (Ladock). When having a child the woman goes through a lot of pain and some women do not have the support system they need or financially stable to be able to provide for a child. In some situations the mother 's health could be at risk if she had a baby. Some medical emergencies, offer women this decision because her own life could be at risk if she went through the pregnancy (Ladock). In some cases it is possible that a woman got raped and got pregnant from it. For example, if a minor got pregnant from being raped they would not be prepared mentally or physically to deliver a baby or take care of the child. A victim of rape should not have to undergo the consequences they did not intend to have so an option would be to have an abortion. Technology has advanced very much to be able to detect things about the baby before labor. In some situations something could be wrong with the baby such as having a disease, they would have to live with if the child was born (Ladock). Life begins at conception, and having an abortion is similar to murder since it is taking a human life. Any human who is physically harmed or killed ends up having some kind of punishment for their wrong doing so abortion should not be any different. There are always alternatives besides having an abortion. Many women cannot get pregnant due to many circumstances they may be going through. Women who are put in those situations may look towards adoption, which could be an alternative instead of having an abortion. When a woman has an abortion it is the killing of a human being which goes against the word of God. When a baby is conceived it is recognized by God, which is demonstrated in Jeremiah 1:5 when he says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” God plans for you to have kids and knows the child before he or she is even formed so by having an abortion you are going against what God wants for you. When having sexual inercourse you know the consequences that are possible. If a woman gets pregnant on accident she knew that there was a possibility of becoming pregnant. People need to take accountability for their own actions and accept the consequences that can happen.
