Literacy Autobiography My mother read to me as a child for fun and school. She read us books such as, Go Dog Go, You Read to Me, I’ll Read to you, and To Kill a Mockingbird. My father read books to my sister and I, such as Fairy Realm, Little House, and Percy Jackson, before bedtime. I now find reading very enjoyable, even though my dyslexia has made reading more difficult.
Home is Where the Learning Starts Children start to love reading at a young age, but when reading textbooks the love for reading slowly starts to deteriorate. Most kids hate to read in school because it’s nothing they are truly interested in when in all reality children need to understand how important reading is. In the essay “My Literacy History” by Dedrick Skinner and “The Lonely Good Company of Books” by Richard Rodriguez he explains how he did not know why reading was so important, but as he grew older he understood its values. I also developed a love for books at young age when my mom began to read to me, but as I grew up I felt reading was a struggle because I didn’t understand its values like Rodriguez.
I noticed that the entire time I was reading, she was watching a little boy play with trucks near us. When I finished reading she went over and picked up all of the other books on the shelf and brought them to me. They consisted mostly of animal books that involved many textures and flaps inside. She picked one up but the little boy came over and took it from her. She immediately got another booked and started saying, “Read kitty.”
In the 21st century, society is lacking the ability to read causing them to lack various skills as well-- “twenty-one percent of adults in the U.S. read below a 5th grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates can’t read.” (The U.S. Illiteracy Rate Hasn’t Changed In 10 Years par.2). In the past, books were a primary source of entertainment, but with the invention of television, phones, computer games, and “electronic” books, it seems that reading books is no longer popular causing society to have a downfall in knowledge. Reading is a mandatory ability that the 21st century needs to inherit due to it contributing empathy and emotion, making people academically advanced and able to think critically, and by helping people understand

I have a daughter, with a reading disability, who does not like to read. I read with her every night with an assigned time of thirty minutes. Her teacher also reads with her during the day. She also reads to a group of kindergarteners, along with her younger sister in the evening. I can definitely say that this increased time and different complexities has helped to improve her reading.
“The kidsREAD classes are kept to small groups of less than 30 children, with volunteers managing and facilitating the session” (Law, Chia, 2015). The classes are held on the weekends once a week. The leaders will read a few stories to the whole group, then it breaks apart into smaller groups to do literacy activities. This program would be need based and students who really needed the instruction would get it. This program provides a way to get students to read outside of school and makes it more enjoyable.
My mother had a love of reading which she desperately tried to pass on to her children. I remember we would go to the Library all the time, which was one of my favorite memories as a child. My mom would tell us to pick out three books each and off we would go. When I was young I defiantly judged a book by its cover, I wanted the outside to look inviting and then maybe I would pick it out to discover what the inside was all about. My mother would read to us every night, at first just some simple children’s books and then, as we got older, we would read novels together.

His famous play Macbeth was written for the King in his early years of reign. King James I was a descendant of the real Banquo; an accomplice of Macbeth who aided in the murderous deeds, which led to speculation that Shakespeare had altered the facts about Macbeth 's reign and Banquo to please the King, as he was a patron of Shakespeare 's acting company. Macbeth himself was based on a real Scottish king of the same name that ruled in the 11th century, centuries before the development of the play.

Growing up I never focused my attention on reading and writing. I found alternate interests in playing video games and bonding with my family. My mother always forced my siblings and I to read three novels every summer, to increase our knowledge, and to expand our imaginations. It wasn’t till later in life where reading became native to me. Every event big or small, helped shape my literacy skills that I’ve achieved through my years of education.
Everyone knows that reading is important, but have you ever asked yourself why is that so? Reading is one of the most beneficial and practical activities that a human being can do. Unfortunately it is a disappointment that people these days read less. As we know, books were the main source of entertainment centuries ago, but with the widespread of technological advances such as the cinema, television, internet, among others, many people left their books on the bookshelf. The purpose of this speech is to present the benefits and the importance of reading.
