Students read more, understand more, and are more likely to continue reading when they have the opportunity to choose what they read (p. 1, Allington & Gabriel).
I think it’s important for students to have an opportunity to choose what they read, so they can find something they enjoy reading. Students can also pick books appropriate for their reading level instead of getting a book above their reading level causing them frustration. Students are often given assigned books to read that students don’t often enjoy or they are too hard for the students to read. This negativity in reading makes students dislike reading. Therefore, if we can get the students interested in reading by giving them options to choose from, we are getting them excited about reading. This excitement in reading would lead to more reading, developing the student’s reading and comprehension skills.
Important to have students read texts that they can read accurately and understand (p. 2, Allington & Gabriel).

I didn’t realize how important this interaction was until I was in my Education classes in college. Many classes in college got me to share my reading and writings that helped me become more insightful about the topic at hand. I feel that others can often help you find aspects in reading and writing that you haven’t seen before. This can open your eyes to a whole new light by getting other people’s perspectives on your reading and writing. I know I have grown to enjoy reading and writing by sharing my thoughts and feelings about my work and others.
