Americas public opinion and national policy had the purpose of minimizing the risk of entering another war.
WWI Neutrality DBQ When WWI began in 1914, the President Woodrow Wilson declared a neutrality policy which most Americans favored, seeing the war as a problem among European nations. In a message to Congress, Wilson asked Americans to “act and speak in the true spirit of neutrality” (A). Wilson’s purpose was not only to prevent conflicts among diverse ethnic groups who supported opposing side, but also to avoid an inherently exhausting war. Despite the US’s non-interventionist stance, the US was never truly neutral—especially when submarine warfare, economic interests, Zimmermann Telegram, and patriotism pushed US foreign policy to largely favor the Allies.
While the United States proclaimed itself as a neutral country in the beginning of the devastating first World War, many disagree with the statement that America wanted to remain neutral for various reasons. World War I began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, then quickly escalated to division into two sides between European countries; including the Allied Powers, which consisted of Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and the Central Powers that included Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. Since the United States made it obvious they favored the Allied Powers before they entered World War I, the other countries against these nations took this friendliness between the countries and America as a threat and interference of war. This resulted in the Central Powers noticing an unfair disadvantage for themselves.

Many may ask how did the United States even get involved in such a war? The United States was not neutral in World war one. Although the US did not join the war until 1917; when the war started in 1914, and they labelled themselves as neutral they subconsciously did things and made request that ultimately helped the Allied powers which were Great Britain, France, Russia, and Italy. Aside from acquiring land and expanding American territory, the United States has established policies that have allowed direct and often indirect military and political control, economic exploitation, and the introduction of American ideals. The U.S. has justified this form of colonialism by claiming that it is for mutual economic pursuits, the spreading of democracy, and the establishment of stable governments in developing countries. Despite America’s noble causes, American imperialism has caused many repercussions. The United States should cease to be an imperialist power as it is economically damaging to countries under its rule, costly to America, violates the fundamental American principle of self-governance, and exacerbates social and political situations in countries America has tampered with.

The U.S. needed to join because they were still being disrespected by countries across the world and I don’t think the world truly knew America’s strength until after World War I. Additionally, the U.S. had suffered many lives lost with Germany’s naval policies and they saw a potential world power imbalance if Germany were to win. With all the money invested into the Allies, the United States would have incurred a worsened Great Depression than what the country saw in the 1930s. Also, the League of Nations was started and if it wasn’t for the League of Nations laying the groundwork for other worldwide collaboration organizations then the world would be in chaos and we would have had more world wars after World War II.
Alliances are formed for different reasons such as the need for financial or military support, trade agreements, investments or loans. Alliances became strong in the early 1800s when european nations either wanted to support French dictator Napoleon Bonaparte or they wanted to defeat him. Alliances weakened in the mid 1800s, but strengthened again in the late 1800s. The Triple Alliance of 1882 was an alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy, fueled by anti- French and anti-Russian feelings. The Triple Entente of 1907 was a three way agreement between Britain, France, and Russia.
The final piece of advice given by George Washington is to stay neutral when it comes to foreign affairs. The country should not be too loyal to one particular country, and should not neglect any other: “Observe good faith and justice towards all nations...to lay hold of slight causes of umbrage... likewise, a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils(4th paragraph). If the country is too loyal to another, they could trick the U.S. and benefit from our mistake. The people should treat all countries equally so there is no conflict.
Another benefit of Isolationism is it allows the US to focus on domestic policy and repairing turmoil from WW1. However, one consequence of the US not getting involved is they could’ve prevented the conflicts building up in Europe that led to World War 2. With isolationism, the US can avoid the costs of war. For example, costs in World War 1 for guns, ammunition, planes, and ships in just the US was 19 billion dollars(Vanderlip).
