Although it 's not a well known substance, Aluminum Phosphide is highly toxic. Exposure to this compound has a fatality rate of over 70%. Aluminum Phosphide is an inorganic compound and looks like yellowish gray crystals. It has a garlic-like odor and reacts in water. Aluminum Phosphide is used in other countries to preserve food. This compound was also often used in pesticides but the use of it decreased due to accidental deaths that occurred. The recycling of used Aluminum Phosphide caused the death of family in Spain. When it reacted with water, death occurred within hours. The most recent problem with this substance happened on January 3rd 2017 when 4 people were killed: a senior and her 3 brothers, the youngest being 7.

The World Health organization said that Aluminum Phosphide is a “common suicide method in low income agricultural parts of the world”. Poisoning mostly results in temporary or permanent disability depending on how much one was exposed to. The National Pesticide Information Center recommends that if the pesticide needs to be mixed, to mix it outside of well ventilated areas where no children, pets, or personal items are around to be contaminated. The center also recommended to avoid using large amounts of water and to always have a plan in case of a spill, paper towels and even cat litter helps clean it up.
