A child in foster care is a child whose parents cannot take care of them and are placed in foster care by local welfare services or by court order (Hill 2005). Foster parents do not have custody but are expected to care for the child as they would their own (Hill 2005). Being a foster parent is a selfless act because you are caring for a child that is not yours, and more than likely will be placed back with their parents. There are many rewards to being a foster parent, but there are just as many downfalls as a foster parent because it affects the emotions of your family.
At any given time in the United States, there are 400,540 children in foster care. In Oklahoma, there are 8,362 children in foster care, 1,982 of which are waiting for a family
