Before the famous Constitution became published on September 17, 1787, there was a huge democracy over it since some people supported it (federalists), while others opposed it (anti-federalists). Basically the main arguments used by the Anti-Federalists in the discussion of the U.S. Constitution was the fact that the Constitution offered too much power to the federal government and that the rights of the people were not promised through a Bill of Rights. In the upcoming US presidential election of 1800, John Adams, a member of the Federalist party, is running for reelection against Thomas Jefferson, a member of the Democratic-Republican party. John Adams favors a strong national power and limited state power. He believes that common people are incapable of governing themselves and is against too much individual freedom. The people who support him are high class citizens such as bankers, manufacturers, and merchants. On the other hand, Thomas Jefferson favors a weak national government and believes that the people are capable of ruling themselves.
In everyday conversations a subject that frequently tends to arise is American politics. More government regulations and oversight do not necessarily provide better quality services and products. Likewise, people who advocate for political freedoms, individualism, and free markets are libertarians. In the simulation today, we met with our respective political parties and reviewed the pieces of legislation. Since each bill is assigned to a specific committee, we split up into our respective committees, where we read each piece of legislation, determined the pros and cons of each piece, and decided if the Republican Party would support or not support each bill. As a part of ongoing series, I am going to try and explain as many of the "types" of libertarians one may encounter in the liberty movement. This movement is a special kind of beast, because not everyone involved in it subscribes to the exact same beliefs or theories. However, we all have a common goal, which is to expand personal liberty and limit government intrusion. I hope to give some members of the movement a little perspective when discussing their viewpoints with others and also to introduce newcomers to the different types of liberty lovers that they may encounter.
Typically, being a libertarian means to be socially liberal and fiscally conservative or you support economic and social freedoms (parks).
