In the simulation today, we met with our respective political parties and reviewed the pieces of legislation. Since each bill is assigned to a specific committee, we split up into our respective committees, where we read each piece of legislation, determined the pros and cons of each piece, and decided if the Republican Party would support or not support each bill. We also decided if a piece of legislation could potentially be used as a point of compromise with the Democrats in Congress. While analyzing the legislation, we described how the passing of the legislation would benefit or disadvantage the government cost-wise, how the legislation would impact the budget, and how, although the legislation may not cost the government a penny, private …show more content…

Some players were calling over Estorian to ask to be interviewed and to tell her about their policy initiatives, while other players, when interviewed by Estorian, would describe what they would attempt to accomplish. The Republican players and the Democratic players were attempting to communicate with one another, as well as with the public, through the media, by describing their goals for this term. Players were also attempting to exert their influence while discussing legislation. Players had to take into consideration their own interests, especially since some players are up for reelection. For example, I am up for reelection, and the Democratic Party is coming after me by saying that I do not provide for lower-income constituents in my district. While there are certain pieces of legislation the Republican Party as a whole would generally be against, since the legislation is contradictory to our core values, I am willing to compromise on a bill or twist around my view on the bill to the Media to make it appear as if I am more in favor of the bill than I am, in order to please my constituents and gain their votes for this next …show more content…

By focusing on legislation which prevents the Democrats from achieving their own policy goals, we are, in a sense, preventing our own party from achieving its own policy goals. The Democrats will not be willing to pass legislation which promotes the interests of the Republican Party if the Republican Party does not promote theirs. I think we made it a priority to “defeat the Democrats” because that is how we see our Congress acting today. We criticize Congress for not being effective and for being blinded by their own ideological stances, yet our sole desire is to so strongly promote our interests that we refuse to even acknowledge how the interests of the Democrats could benefit voters and citizens of the United States. If we do not show the Democrats that we are willing to promote some of their interests if they promote some of ours, then no legislation will be passed. It will drag out the political
