In her article, “Teach Them Spanish Early, Too,” Carlene Carmichael questions why young Californians are not being taught a basic understanding of both the English and the Spanish language. Carmichael contends that more job opportunities are available to bilingual applicants. She suggest that children could be taught both languages together from a young age. Carmichael pities the many Americans who are barred from employment at bilingual businesses because of this disadvantage and she wonders if anyone else feels the same. The article "The Struggle to be an American Girl" by Elizabeth Wong it is about a Chinese girl who did not want to learn or speak her first language and chose just to speak English. However, being bilingual has benefits like communication, jobs opportunities, etc. I chose to be bilingual for two reasons. the first reason is communication. Communication is important and if we know more than one language, it is possible to communicate with more than one group of people.

Though throughout this book it was never said in writing that she has mental illness like depression, but it was hinted at. Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare two Latino families and their children on how parental instruction affects communication using Augmentative and Alternative communication (AAC) during reading. The research’s design was used a single-subject, multiple baseline approach. The participants were two Latino families with a child at least three years of age who presented a motor speech impartment. Each family was given a book to use through out the study, which they would read to their children like any other child’s book. With the books the families were also given different communication displays with individual symbols and each child had their usual AAC system.
Growing up learning two languages may sometimes be difficult but it will benefit the person learning in many ways. Not only will learning two languages help in getting higher paying jobs, but it will give a better view of both cultures and their history. I agree with Alarid’s statement that Mexican Americans in the United States should learn both English and Spanish. Alarid shares his view on why it is important to learn English and Spanish. Being bilingual is only a way we can prosper in our society by being able to have a better understanding in communicating with our peers.
Being bilingual has helped me in so many ways in my job and also in my youth group. The fact that I know two languages is incredible. Spanish being part of who I am and English because it is an essential language to know. In my job currently I have many customers that speak really little English and knowing Spanish helped them feel more comfortable. In a documentary Speaking in Tongues, directed by Jarmel & Schneider (2010), four students who range from Kindergarten to eighth grade, showcase their experiences about attending public school around the San Francisco area to become bilingual. The four students Durrell, Jason, Julian, and Kelly are taught in English and also in a second language such as Mandarin, Spanish, Chinese, and Cantonese.

My hypothesis is that being bilingual makes you a better student than a non bilingual student. The believe that knowing two languages was not good for children because it made them confuse. It’s been proven that this is wrong because it actually makes them concentrate better in school. The growth of children who are bilingual has increased in the years 2014-2015 to estimated 4.6 million in public schools.
