Being bilingual, or speaking another language besides your native language has many benefits. While it is difficult for many people to learn a second language, the pros out way the cons for many people. People who know a second language have an advantage in the workplace. While there are translators, it would be beneficial to not have to rely on one.

A recent study investigated the relationship between head start children’s receptive language development and their kindergarten reading outcomes. Eighty-eight bilingual children who attended Head Start programs in urban centers in Central Pennsylvania participated in the study. To qualify for this study, the child’s mother had to speak the Puerto Rican dialect of Spanish. The children were divided
