When developing a federal budget, difficult decisions must be made in order for there to be any progress. These decisions may vary depending on the individual’s goals and objectives at hand. Therefore, if today the budget would be approved, and I could choose to invest in either food stamps, solar energy, or nuclear arms development, I would chose to invest in food stamps.
Before I express my reasoning behind my decision of food stamps, allow me to explain the reasoning behind not choosing to invest in solar energy or nuclear arms development. The main reason I did not choose to invest in this is because I do not support it. With the United States already holding around ten times the amount of opposing nations, I do believe we are perfectly fine with the amount we already possess and do not need any further development of anymore nuclear arms. In fact, we as a nation are still sending apologize to those in Japan for the nuclear bombing that they had received. In my personal opinion, morally and for our safety as well, there is no real need to increase the amount we already have. Furthermore, in order to build these nuclear arms there is a tremendous cost to both develop and maintain these arms (List of Pros and Cons of Nuclear Weapons 4). Lastly, the further development of these arms could strain relationship and cause additional tension between the United States and other nations around the globe.
In the simplest form, I would invest in food stamps because I have a great issue with individuals, especially children, being hungry. In America, “48.8 million people, including 13 million children live in households that lack the means to get enough nutritious food on a regular basis” (Child Hunger Facts 2). This is a major issue. In a prosperous country like the United States, there is no valid reasoning for human beings, especially children, to go
