According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, eugenics is: “a science that deals with the improvement (as by control of human mating) of hereditary qualities of a race or breed”. ("Definition of Eugenics by Merriam-Webster") The most common example of this concept would be the Holocaust, which was the extermination of Jewish people and others deemed “unfit” for society in World War Ⅱ. But little do many know, the Nazi’s were not the only people practicing eugenics in the early 1900’s, eugenics was being practiced in the United States long before the Holocaust. The American Eugenics Society aimed to educate American people on the science of Eugenics.
It is impressive that this idea originated from a period of time where there was little knowledge about genes. In conclusion, the idea of eugenics develops during the progressive era and it affect many people during this period of time. This idea of eugenics was where more progress occurs in science. Well not all about the idea of eugenics is bad is has some good points like it can reduce number of babies born with some mental illness or some with really bad illness.
The impact of the inauguration of scientific beliefs and studies on eugenics in the 1800’s is still evident in modern United States today. Eugenics is defined as eugenicists promoting the naturally fit people who carried desirable traits to increase a population with hopes of a community filled with intelligent citizens. Positive eugenics advocated the superior people to marry each other and reproduce to create as many offsprings in order to increase the number of the fit. Negative eugenics would discourage the disabled from reproducing at all, so that they would not compete with the superior. The endorsement from the government allowed scientists to implement their ideas on eugenics and some aspect of their policies is used today.
1920 U.S.A Eugenics Eugenics: (Noun/Verb): The act of attempting the perfection of genes within a pre-existing population similar to that of selective breeding within a select species of mammals. During the Roaring Twenties of the United States a process of artificial selection arose known as the process of Eugenics. Eugenics is as stated, a process of elimination of the “Lesser” individuals to preserve traits that are thought highly of. During the latter 19th Century and the early 20th Century, eugenics was considered a favored method of preserving society, therefore only showcasing the preferred traits within society.
In Edwin Black’s videos on eugenics The term eugenics was first used by Sir Francis Galton in 1883, who is a respected British scholar and natural scientist, who also was influenced by Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection. The popular theory in the late 19th century was Social Darwinism, which focused around the idea of “survival of the fittest”, this helped advocate eugenics into serious scientific study in the early 1900’s. Galton used the term eugenics as a meaning of “well-born”, he believed that the by selectively breeding individuals who have “preferred” traits the human race could help direct its future. Galton’s upper class Britain studies were based on this idea.

IDS 2023 Foundations of Life Science Cortni Taylor It is a difficult task to properly consider every aspect of eugenics; the ethical, social, and historical ramifications it has on millions of people around the world. This movement was first proposed in 1883 by Sir Francis Galton as a means to bring about the betterment of society through the “improvement” of an individual’s genes (Rielly, 2015). He proposed this “improvement” through passing along “desirable” traits through those thought superior (i.e., positive eugenics). This eventually evolved into negative eugenics, or the prevention of allowing individuals thought to be unfit or “degenerate” from passing along their genes.
In the next few pages I will cover some questions that were raised in regards to eugenics. I will describe what eugenics is, what policies were generated to create the ideal population, and also the differences between birth control and population factoring in the perspective of eugenics. We will ask about the similarities between the Nazi and the U. S eugenic policies, since eugenic was first started within the United States from early 1900 until World War II and was then implemented and passed on in Germany by Adolf Hitler. Eugenics is a law created to control sex and population to ensure the best quality of a specific population, it is viewed as a public good by focusing on a certain group of people (Solinger, 1947: page 7). Also, eugenics is the use of scientific languages to push an ideology and population control policies.
The history of Eugenics Sir Francis Galton Sir Francis Galton first used the term ‘eugenics’ in 1883. He defines eugenics as the “study of agencies under social control that may improve or impair the racial qualities of future generations, either physically or mentally.” Galton was born in 1822. He was pressured to follow in the footsteps of Erasmus Darwin, his great-uncle. No one knows why Galton decided to study eugenics as had little experience in biology.
What prompted the rise of Eugenics in the United States was their increasing belief that deficiencies in humans were hereditary. Also, there was growing worry that Americans were providing too much support for the degenerates, and needed to place more emphasis on positively fit individuals to ‘improve’ the race. They defined an aspect of fitness with beauty while ugly as a defect (Pernick 94). Lower class people were deemed to be ‘unfit’ while the middle and upper classes were classified as superior. When concerning higher status women, Eugenicists encouraged positive eugenics, or rather procreating as much as they can conceive.
Eugenics or “good breeding” is meant to improve the human race through the gene pool using various methods. Similar to designer babies, the process could be used for good, but like Colin Tudge points out, “…although guns and bombs can be used as agents of peace, [humans] should not be overly surprised when in practice they are used to make war” (Tudge 282). Eugenics can be performed simply by regulating who and who cannot mate. It can also be done by sterilization, a procedure that permanently blocks pregnancy in a woman, which was a reality for many. The most famous account was performed by Germany, specifically the Nazis, during WWII, when 400,000 women were sterilized (Tudge 284).
Even though artificial genetic selection is not available for humans yet; it is being done on plants and other living things. Which is the next step in order for it to be done on humans. There is controversy on the idea of genetic engineering on people even though it isn’t even a reality yet. Arguments made about the idea of eugenics are it should be allowed for people to do because people should be able to do what they want with their family, that is shouldn’t be allowed because it is a way of playing and going against what “god” wants, and that it would benefit society because it could help get rid of serve medical conditions that can cut people’s lifespan dramatically. However, the validity of eugenics being used on people has been debated from a moral perspective since its creation, but even if it was morally justified eugenics would not work the way people expect it would. It is thought that improvement of the human race can be seen through sterilization of people who exhibit undesirable traits and selective breeding.
