Pros And Cons Of Genetic Modification

1297 Words6 Pages

From the moment a child is born, a parent wants nothing more than two things: to protect them from everything and to give them all the opportunities they never had. In the last fifteen years, science has greatly aided their efforts by providing potential parents with a life changing choice- do I want my child to be genetically manufactured? Genetic modifications in an embryo can determine whether or not a child will have blue eyes or be less prone to cardiovascular disease, however this great medical advancement has seen much controversy. Even though genetically modified children represent a great leap in technological advancements, it is largely unethical because people will harm society by introducing new humans that were not intended …show more content…

In Psalm 139:13-16, King David writes of God’s profound love for His children and that he was “curiously wrought” or created by God in a manner that is similar to human DNA. This remarkable chapter of the Bible shows that God sees our “substance” before it is completed. Our body was written in God’s “book” before we even existed. What this means is that God possesses a ‘book’ where the blueprint for the formation of a person’s body is stored before a person even exists. Many believe that God has put into place “societal regulators” that will regulate the human population. Even if a woman is unable to have children, however sad, it was God’s plan for her to not have children. By manipulating God’s “societal blueprints” with in-vitro fertilization, society is harming the natural order of life by introducing more humans into society that were not intended to be there in the first place. One of the only cases of genetically modified babies occurred when a child was diagnosed with autism and it was that determined that the risk of chromosomal anomalies is significantly higher in modification cases over natural procedures. According to the Bible it is God who gives life and ultimately designs human DNA. Nethertheless with pride and arrogance, humanity is once again attempting to usurp and “play God” through DNA manipulation. Satan even …show more content…

Evolution simply states that as environments change, the species that are best suited to new habitats will survive. Without diversity in a species, adaptations to new environments is more difficult without a wide range of individuals to choose and mate with. The evolution of humans has spanned over 2 million years and has resulted in the variety of people seen today. This evolution will simply stop and humans won’t see any change to the species due to the uniformity of their genetic material.; Another horrific side effect of genetic modification has nothing to do with health but that it may trigger a "patent" war meaning these genetically modified humans could become patentable property. A 2005 study found that 4,382 of the 23,688 human genes in the National Center for Biotechnology Information's gene database are claimed as intellectual property. This means that nearly 20% of human genes are patented. Even genes that cause diseases are patented such as those that cause Alzheimer's, asthma, muscular dystrophy and many others. In a society where designer babies exist, companies can patent the genes that cause blue eyes or the genes that cause Down’s Syndrome. Myriad Genetics based out of Utah is one of the organizations that controls patents including the two genes that cause hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. As a result, Myriad Genetics has the right to prevent
