Homesteading where you are NOW It’s easy to think that you can’t be a homesteader because of where you live. I get it. That was totally me, too. There are different ways to homestead - no matter where you live. Don’t think location. Homesteading is a lifestyle. As a matter of fact, the very definition of homesteading, according to Webster’s is: “a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterized by subsistence agriculture, home preservation of foodstuffs, and it may or may not also involve the small scale production of textiles, clothing, and craftwork for household use or sale.” All one truly needs to homestead from where they are is the will and desire to do so. Crazy, right? Can you even imagine homesteading from an apartment? Guess what: that’s what I do now! My backyard is completely dry-scaped. This means there is no ground readily available to plant seeds. We handcrafted (meaning we nailed some 2X4 wood planks together) some beds, threw in some soil and started planting! This way, we are growing veggies and saving money at the grocery store! If a raised garden bed is a little out of reach for you at the moment, don’t stress! Create a porch garden using pots, buckets and whatever else you can find. While a true homesteader will start their garden from seed, if space is scarce, purchase veggie starts instead. You will still be gardening and you will still be growing food. Improvising is KEY to homesteading and what better way to do it!? Cook your own food from scratch. I cannot stress this enough! Cooking and eating your own food will ensure that your meals will be fresh and nourishing. You will never again have to wonder what exactly is in that dish you just fed to your beloved family! There will be no more processed food and no more fast food – just good, healthy food that is kind to your
