In modern day society, immigration has become the center of much attention and also much controversy, from an economic perspective or a political one, and even came to be a major driving force of the 2016 United States presidential election. In 2007, the United States reached its peak record of 12.2 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States, which was approximately 4% of the United States population at the time. Following the recession, the numbers have declined and remained relatively consistent around 11 million, with 11.3 million estimated in 2016.
