Imperialism is an issue deeply rooted in American politics. The question of whether to partake in the imperialistic trend set by other world powers or to condemn the act has always been a debate among American politicians and economists alike. Imperialism is just a waste of time and resources and makes the United States vulnerable. Imperialism does more harm than good to the United States’ economy, values, and military resources.

U.S products flooded the Mexican market and caused many Mexican citizens to migrate to the U.S in order to make a living (Shor). Imperialism also allows “capital to leave [the United States] shores” and “[foreign] subjects [to] seek work” in the US (Bryan). Due to cheaper production and labor costs the U.S imported four times as many automobiles from low average wage countries in 1995 than they did any other country. (Smith). Furthermore, the United States lost six million jobs between 2000 and 2009 partially due to the economic recession, but a majority were moved to other countries because of the lower costs of production (Paul). The Washington Consensus was a series of imperialistic policies that left many impoverished countries’ citizens in debt and unable to access public health services (Waitzkin and Jasso-Aguilar). Outside of Imperialism the United States already has free trade deals with other countries “without taking [these] countries into [the United States’] national household” (Schruz). Free trade leads to lower prices and higher production levels because it encourages countries to produce more products and services that directly benefit
