Amanda Ripley argues in her article, The Case Against High-School Sports, that American high-schools should concentrate less on sports and more on education. One of the main points of the article compares the academic success of American high-schools to that of high-schools in other countries. The other main point of the article compares the academic success of American high-schools affiliated with sports to those that are not. The results of the two studies are both shocking and expected at the same time. America is one of the most affluent and demographically developed countries in the world.
The passages “The Olympics, Then and Now” and “A Great Athlete” support the claim that Olympian James Cleveland Owens embodies and transformed the Olympic athletic ideal from ancient times and early modern era Olympics. Owen embodies the ancient greek athletic ideal that in the past any free man could participate and as an african american, the Olympics didn’t discriminate. Owens represents the early modern Olympic Games because he traveled to another country for the games. In early modern Olympics, games were open to people all around the world. Owen’s transformed the athletic ideal with his achievement of winning four gold medals which no other athlete matched until about fifty years later.
Have high school sports teams brought a negative effect on American School’s education? In the Article “The Case against High School Sports", published by the Atlantic, Amanda Ripley argues the negative effects of high-school sports on a student’s education in America. Also she discusses how today's society make people think that high school sports is more of a necessity to students than getting a good education. However, Amanda fails to persuade the general audience because she used an excess of unneeded interviews by foreign exchange students and had failed to tear down the counterargument that sports teach discipline and social skills, which resulted in the audience feeling unchanged about their opinions toward the subject.
In the book East of Eden, a young girl, Abra Bacon begins as the average girl for the time, a symbol of femininity and pureness in her family. However, as time went on she began to internally rebel, realizing that she didn’t have to conform to that standard and that she could be herself. In heart she is an magnificently kind and beautiful young women on the inside and out. In the book it is written that “It was only after Aron went away to college that abra really gotta know his family.”(ch. 44), to me this shows that she was being confined by her childhood wants and knowledge even though she had gained greater knowledge of the world and of herself since then.
