Why shouldn't we make voting mandatory
Mandatory voting
Disadvantages of compulsory voting
Don’t take our word for it - see why 10 million students trust us with their essay needs.
I believe that Americans should be required to vote. Compulsory voting allows everyone to have a say about who they think is fit in the government. It allows the polls to be more accurate and the number of votes increase. Required voting allows those who can 't or don 't have time to make it the day or time off work. Requiring people to vote is like a boss requiring his employees to get to work on time, it 's short and easy but also important and effective.
The argument for compulsory voting is basically undemocratic because the first amendment talks about how you have freedom. The freedom of choice must include the freedom not to choose. Democracy deeply values individual freedom which means if compulsory voting was mandatory, It is a clear violation of liberty and the first amendment. I argue that voting should not be mandatory in America because first, non-voters are uninformed, it doesn’t improve the democratic climate, and it requires a national database. American is one of the most powerful and big countries in the world.
Voter ID laws are two sided, but most Americans feel that it is necessary to prevent voter fraud. Republicans feel that an individual should already have a state ID because this is required by so many government agencies. Unfortunately, the Democrats are the ones to be most likely affected due to their voters’ economic status, disabilities and age. Whereas, Democrats believe that it is a tactic to defer their supporters from voting.
The Voting Rights Act was one of the most revolutionary bills ever passed by the congressional legislation in the United States. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the bill into law on August 6th, 1965, not only as part of politics but also, a depiction of morals. Since 1965, it has protected minority voters at the polls, but it has been fifty years since the Voting Rights Act has been passed and it is still a controversial topic that is constantly debated on today. The voting rights of all minorities throughout the country are once again under attack which impacts one’s ability to exercise his or her constitutional right as a citizen.
Evidence of this is in ”Unequal Participation: Democracy’s Unresolved Dilemma, American Political Science Review, Vol.91 No.1” by an Australian supporter of compulsory voting, this states that by compelling people to vote, we are likely to arouse them with an intelligent interest and to give them a political knowledge that they do hold at present process. This evidence helps explain why Americans should be required to vote because, if people don't vote, nothing will get fixed, for example: schools, offices, and, libraries. Although, it is possible to understand why some people might think that Americans should not be required to vote. They could say that people are dishonest and have the right to choose, or how compulsory voting is a restriction.
If we want to assure the American citizens won't lose their right to vote we have to educate them. Most of the time certain voting rights were taken away due to the fact congress did not believe Americans were educated enough to know what they were voting for. The American citizens that are more than likely to lose their voting rights will be poorly educated and they will be minorities. In order to protect their rights, they have to know their rights and be able to fight back. By educating these citizens we eliminate a major reason for taking away voting rights.
However after various discussions, my opinion is changed. I now believe that it would not be beneficial to make voting mandatory,
Throughout the recent years the majority of the able voting population are exercising their privilege to vote. Even during the presidential elections the voter turnout rate was 50% or less than that. The act of voting should be a personal responsibility of every citizen meaning it should be a obligation. But to specify on this statement, it should not lawfully required to vote because people also have the right not to vote too (and it would be weakening personal liberties) , but it should be a personal responsibility for citizens if they are to complain about how the government run rather than every citizen. A personal responsibility is when we are the cause of our own actions.
Have you ever asked yourself "how would the world be if there was no structure to allow people to vote for the person who is leading their country?". How about "Does my vote really count ?" or "does the opinion and choice of me, one person, really make a difference?". These questions aren't simply answered but should be seriously thought of by anybody who is a citizen of a country which has an established government and truly cares about the wellbeing and future of the country that they live in. I will be focused on the importance of voting for the president themselves is important. Individuals whom are over the age 18 and have a vailidated citisenship of the country they wish to vote on, have the opretunitiy to vote on several different ascepts of the government.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines controversy as “a discussion marked especially by the expression of opposing views”(“Controversy”). There are a bunch of controversies that affect Americans today. Some major controversies currently are health problems, not taking care of ourselves, and death. Controversies have been known to hurt loved ones and hurt friends. Regardless of the topic, people will have different opinions and will argue.
I dont think lowering the voting age would benifit the govornmen or posotivly effect the voting percentage. Most likely i think it would discourage the older population from voting. Older people dont tend to think highly of the younger generations opinions. The two arguments I have seen focuse alot on the turnouts of the voting population and not on the mind of the younger voting population.
Today, I read intertesting articles on different views on as to why the voting age should stay 18 years old and also why it shouldn't. I found some very valuable perspectives from each opposite arguement. After analyzing both opinions I have came to a conclusion of what I believe is best from my point of view. The conclusion I have came to is that the voting age should not be lowered. I have this opinion due to multiple reasons that were I pulled from the text.
“1984” is a classic novel, written by George Orwell, and hailed for its depiction of a dystopian future. Orwell describes a suppression of critical thought, regulated by a regime that is totalitarian in nature. In the book, Orwell portrays Great Britain, reimagined as a dystopian super nation. He describes how Big Brother, Oceania, and the Minis use Newspeak to tell their version of facts, truths, and realities. Big Brother oversees the oppressive regime.
The right to vote was a privilege given to only a particular group of people in the past. The right to participate in the judicial system to some is an honor. This process allows people to voice and chose who they want in office or what issue they want to support. Voter Id laws are incorporated into our society as a form of control in order to keep people silent. Voter id laws are under controversy because the law is viewed as being discriminatory against minorities.
Others argue that it helps to protect everyone’s right to vote and ensure that no one takes someone else’s right. There is a way to make sure everyone is able to vote but their vote is also protected from
