Even with all the food gone, Louie was hopeful and determined to persevere. Many days later, things were looking grim for the three men. But Louie didn’t let it faze him. While on the raft, “...they imagined themselves back in the world again, they willed a happy ending onto their ordeal and made it their expectation”(146). Jamie had to face the decision to give up what she worked hard and her carefully thought out plan to help her brother’s family stay afloat, just like her parents are doing, or to continue to live out her dream and goals. Jamie had carefully planned out their lives so that they would not be left to struggle like her brother and sister-in-law. Charlton’s wife and kids are currently facings a financial crisis when a saw severally damages Charlton’s leg to the point where it had to be amputated. Everyone in the family is expected to help out and Jamie’s mom insists on selling the lake house to help out. Her mother implied she manipulated Charlton to do exact same thing, “sacrifice” something important to help the over all family unit.
In the end they decided to jump into the river to get their belongings. But soon after they realized that it was a very bad decision. This is very similar to our group’s decision because some people decided that is was an excellent idea to go after the items, while I did not. Our reasons were very similar too. The reason why I chose not to jump into the river was because that I thought that the water was going to be too cold and that the water would be too rough.

Often, we find ourselves facing events in our lives that force us to redefine ourselves. Such circumstances try to break the heart of the human nature in us. It is at that time, the humanity in us either shatters apart, or it transforms into a strong bundle of compassion.

The friendship that they form helps them to survive nature 's attack. Moving forward, Crane informed the readers that the four men, they knew that their destiny are controlled by some outside force. Even if they had the same thoughts, they didn’t share them which each other: "If I am going to lose my life to the sea--if I am going to lose my life to the sea--if I am going to lose my life to the sea— why, was I allowed to come this far and see sand and trees?” (11).
When someone is alive people do not see the value of life and how precious it is, they do not realize it until it is too late. Many people would not notice such a small moment like this in their lives and would take it for granted. However, the characters seen in the novel treasure every moment similar to how they treasure life. They are able to see the value of life and how each person 's struggles has helped them heal. People are able to see that the obstacles an individual faces, which leads them to survival.
