The Klan was able to put forth such a radical candidate because the politicians in the city before were obnoxiously corrupt and the voters were losing patience. Michigan Klan used this opportunity to gain more influence; they were successful. Michigan was unique because during the progressive era, the state experienced an influx of both Catholic immigrants and Black Americans. The Klan preyed on the fears of the white population and implemented recruiting tactics that were successful.
