Lower Minimum Wage, Just Like Your Expectations
Minimum wage has been around for many years, starting after the Great Depression to protect the workers from being underpaid. It was never intended to be a livable wage, but in our modern era the public has been trying to argue that it should be enough to live off of, without any real knowledge of the topic. Minimum wage jobs rarely require high skill levels or any prior job experience and are typically for teenagers and college students. A few states have been raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour due to protests to get it raised because people claimed that minimum wage wasn’t enough to live off of. On one side,bank accounts might look nicer, there paychecks might look better, and they could be able to make a living off of it. On the other side, hours would most likely get cut, up to 9 million jobs could be destroyed, and companies might switch to automated machines to save cost. Prices on items will go up so companies can pay to keep their employees with such a high hourly pay. Small businesses will have to shut down when they can’t pay the employees, leaving more jobless people. Minimum wage was started so employers could not take advantage of their workers, it was never created as a livable wage. Pushing to make minimum wage to a livable amount of money is absurd, it will take jobs away, lower hours, and make items and services more expensive. The millennials, and other workers who do not want to make a career for themselves do not deserve $15 an hour to to flip a burger at Mcdonalds. These jobs were created as a first job, not a career, those who are protesting, trying to make a livable wage on a first job are unaware of the consequences it will have on the workforce. Seattle is just one example of the failure it will cause to have $15 pay an hour. Stores closed, employees were laid off, and prices jumped. While making more money would be nice, there’s a good chance that in the end, one would still end up making the same amount they did before because of less hours, and higher
