Is abortion murder? If one answers yes to this question, one would most likely also support the complete and utter outlawing of abortion within the United States. But why would anyone want to outlaw abortion, you may wonder. The answer, or part of the answer, is that one believes abortion may harm a woman’s fertility, increase their risk of developing cancer, and cause harm to their mental health in some way, shape or form. But what would happen if abortion was outlawed, you may also wonder. If abortion was outlawed, one could expect abortion rates to go up, for women to still want and/or need an abortion, and for women’s rights to take a drastic fall.

The 14th Amendment as written in the Constitution does not define the unborn as a person, thus it is the property of the woman. By outlawing abortion across the board, a woman would be deprived of her 14th Amendment right to “life, liberty, or property” (“Bill of Rights and Later Amendments.”). She would also be deprived of her right to personal privacy – which includes a “woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy” (“Abortion.”). Bodily autonomy or integrity is the right to control what happens to your own body, such as donating blood or bone marrow. To deny a woman her right to abort a pregnancy, the government of the United States is diminishing her bodily integrity past what even a corpse has. A corpse which cannot be made to donate blood or a kidney, no matter how many lives that may save, despite being deceased. For a living person to be deprived of this right is abhorrent and wrong.
