Reagan On East-West Relation and Clinton Ronald Reagan was surely one of America’s most influential presidents in the realm of international policy. President Reagan was now given the opportunity in the mid-80s when Mikhail Gorbachev was selected as the new Soviet Union leader. Gorbachev was looking to reform the Soviet Union and reduce military spending, this played out well for Ronald Reagan and his agenda of a free world. In his Iron Curtain speech, Winston Churchill talked about a metaphorical iron curtain that separated the Soviet Union from the rest of the world. One of the actions of the Soviet Union was to build the Berlin wall to separate the Soviet side and the U.S. and other countries side of the city. Similar to Winston Churchill's ideas about an iron curtain separating the Soviets from the world, the Soviets put up an actual wall to separate their side of the city from the other, and to make sure no one could cross sides of the city. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Soviet Union put missile sites in Cuba, which is very close to the United States, and could have easily shot missiles at the United States from there, (Doc. 7).

In both Kennedy and Khrushchev’s speeches they are careful to say what people want to hear, they are both arguing about their own communist views, and both don’t want to begin a war, because Khrushchev and Kennedy want to be favored by the world. Being favored by the audience is the most important thing to both leaders in the speeches. They easily fill the people with negative thoughts of their opponents, and positive thoughts of themselves. Different methods are taken to reach their final goal. In the end of the day the speeches share a similar objective.
