Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario is about a little boy, Enrique, who lived in Honduras. His mother, Lourdes, moved to America to make money for her family because she wasn’t making enough in Honduras to put food on the table for her family. She had 2 kids, Enrique and Belky. After years of many promises broken and very brief conversations between each other, Enrique decided that he was going to try his hardest to make it to America to see his mother. Drugs were his way of rebellion because he was tired of moving in and out with all sorts of family members.

Over 28% of children in state care are abused while in the child care system. Once placed in foster care, a child is not always guaranteed to be safe from abuse. Ashley Rhodes-Courter was abused in one of the foster homes she was put in. She was starved and beaten almost on a daily basis when living in that home. I completed the mandated reporter training for the state of Virginia. Being a mandated reporter means knowing what needs to be reported and how to identify signs or key phrases to look out for. The online training goes over different types of child abuse and neglect and provides information to become aware of signs pertaining to abuse or neglect. However, Foster homes can often run the neglect and abuse of a child, given the stereotype to be inefficient in giving children new homes. In another case, the foster parent who had some experience in the medical field thought that the foster kid had allergies and she took him to the child’s pediatrician, and he told her that it was something else, therefore, she could not see an allergist. She called the social worker, and he told her that she had no choice other than to do what the pediatrician said. As a result, she had to give chest physical therapy every night so the kid could sleep. Foster parents will instill in the children many of the skills they as they grow up that they will need to face life’s opportunities and challenges. They will help teach them the tools they need to become productive members in society. The Foster parents are responsible for working in conjunction with the child's team and at time could include their birth families. This in itself can become challenging. It is hard to sit at a meeting where the parents are knowing that they abused the child.
Madison Rummel I feel that if it is our job to report it, we have to report. Kids or adolescents have to understand that if you go to someone about child abuse they have to tell someone about it. But I would make sure that child knows that i would be on there side and make sure nothing would happen to them and they can trust me on helping them on this issue. That's also can keep away the negative feeling the parent or client might have on the issue. I would make sure the parents know that i am their child's counselor and i wouldn't do anything to them that would harm them but protect them.
