The CRTC is meant to facilitate an elite and diverse broadcasting system for all Canadians. Netflix has become an exciting program that is exclusively online. It’s a service that streams movies and television programs for an affordable price. Now the problem about Canadian Netflix is that it lacks Canadian content and it does not even come close to the American version of Netflix. “It has been documented that Netflix Canada has only about one third of the titles offered by Netflix USA” (Huffington Post, 2011). The CRTC need to regulate Netflix in order to promote Canadian content, also to update the library to compete with America’s stacked library of films and shows. The CRTC would even promote Canadian film-makers and Canadian culture by …show more content…
Now a study reports that, “The Canadian service only provides 3000 plus films and shows while America provides double that”. Now Canada comes with both content that is American, Canadian, and International. The library quality is the second highest in the world but is significantly lower to the number one spot. Our neighbours down south are blessed with a well oiled machine that continue to pump out films and tv series. Canadian film industries have lacked big time films but usually produce small budget indie films. This is because CRTC has eased their laws and Canada rather buy cheap from the US. The United States is at the highest point of capitalism and the by-product of this is cultural industries. Canada know that the US have an exorbitant amount of cultural materials, “so it is generally cheaper for Canadian television networks to buy and broadcast US programs than it is to produce their own”. Now this strictly focused on Canadian television but this can be applied to Netflix because these products will go to the Canadian catalogue. This trade between both countries seem to benefit both countries but restrict Canadian’s creativity. The media industry in Canada will not truly flourish with this ongoing trade and thus not enough Canadian films will be produced. Canada in turn need to limit this broadcasting trade and focus on letting our film industries create. So if the the CRTC regulate Netflix, and place a law that requires a certain amount of Canadian content. That will produce more Canadian content and also spark the Canadian film industry. With the huge numbers of Canadians on Netflix and with the regulated laws on the streaming service it would provide Canadian film industries to entertain Canadians once again. The new regulation would only aid in promoting Canadian culture and enact on the CRTC’s main
