Death penalty is the ultimate punishment, administered to someone legally convicted of a capital crime. Men and women who have taken part in these criminal acts have been executed through the death penalty. Lethal injection, electrocution, gas chamber, hanging, and firing squad are the five types of executions. The use of the death penalty is a very controversial topic and there is much debate surrounding this issue. Being pro death penalty, people feel that it would dissuade others from committing serious crimes, makes sure that criminals wont strike again, and the belief that someone who has taken the life of another doesn't deserve to live. On the contrary being against death penalty, people feel that executing a murder makes us no different than the murderer, the chance that the person is innocent, and that there is no relation between capital punishment and the crime rate. The first established death penalty laws are in the Code of King Hammurabi of Babylon in the 18th century. 25 different crimes where codified for the death penalty. It is the killing of a person using a lethal dose of drugs administered intravenously. Lethal injection has two different types: three drug system and one drug system. The three drug system first uses either sodium thiopental or pentobarbital to put the inmate to sleep. Once the inmate is unconscious they are injected with pancuronium bromide which paralyzes the entire muscle system and stops the breathing.
