In the story The Tempest Prospero is tempted to show the bad sides of him, but compared to everyone else in the story, Prospero is a good man. When it was time to get revenge on his enemies, he chose to forgive them and let them go. Prospero also raised Miranda after being banished from the island, Prospero shows his loyalty to Gonzalo, and Prospero allows Caliban to stay on the island.
One example is that when Prospero and Miranda were banished from the kingdom, Prospero decided to raise Miranda all by himself on the island. “O, a cherubim. Thou was that did preserve me! Thou didst smile. Infused with a fortitude from heaven” (1.2.153-154). In this quote Prospero reassures Miranda that she wasn’t a burden and that she was more of a gift from the heavens. At the beginning of the story Prospero acknowledged Gonzalo’s loyalty towards him. “A noble Neapolitan, Gonzalo. Out of his charity, who being then appointment.Master of this design, did give us, with Rich garments, linens, stuffs, and necessaries”(1.2.161-164). When Prospero was banned from the island and had nothing Gonzalo gave hime things to survive. So instead of punishing him, Prospero then shows his loyalty back to Gonzalo by release him and letting him go. “Their clear reason. O good Gonzalon, my true preserver, and a loyal sir.,To him you follow’st! I will pay thy graces ” (5.1.68-70).
