MDD has different influences on individuals which include biological and psychosocial impact. The psychosocial impact is defined as the combined psychological and the social implications that a person will experience because of MDD. According to the scar model, depression is the cause of low self-esteem. The sad feelings that characterise patients’ daily moods eventually damage their self-esteem (Whitbourne, 2013). In other words, depression can cause an unhealthy sense of self-esteem. To illustrate, if a patient is already depressed, he or she is more likely to question even further how likeable they are. In relation to human diversity, each client is unique and different in how they perceive MDD. Thus, with critical thinking skills, the social worker will think about the unique thoughts and experiences that underlie each client's journey with MDD without making a biased judgment. What seems illogical at the beginning may be better understood with regards to the biopsychosocial factors in the client's life. For example, the clients would understand that effective communication can help them in expressing their emotions and solving problems in healthier ways. When the client has a good experience in communicating, this allows the social worker to introduce Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). IPT help clients to strengthen their social skills and organise their relationships to have an increased support for dealing with various life stressors (APA, 2017). As a result of experiencing effective communication, the client is likely to carry out what they learn in IPT to their daily lives. Hence, IPT helps the client to alleviate the social impact as they learn how to look for help within their support systems. This could potentially improve the relationship between the client and their family as well as it can help the client overcome MDD.
