According to Kendra Cheery (n.d.) a psychological disorder is also known as a mental disorder. A mental disorder impacts multiple life areas, it causes pain and suffering for someone. Most mental disorders are not inherited genetically. There are many factors that can cause a psychological disorders such as a complex group of genetic, psychological, and environmental factors (Dryden-Edwards, n.d.). Pets are known for being a man’s best friend a companion but little do people know that they have many positive effects on our mental health. Bonding with an animal will benefit someone’s emotional and psychological problems as well as its physical health. According to Johnson owning and interacting with a pet can improve our health (Johnson, 2011) the interaction will reduce your stress levels tame your blood pressure, curb your depression, and reduce feelings of loneliness. Humans have many psychological problems some of these psychological problems are stress and depression. Pets are beneficial for these types of psychological disorders as stated by Johnson, interacting or owning a pet will curb someone’s depression. They found that the person's blood pressure lowered, heart rate slowed, breathing became more regular and muscle tension relaxed-all of which are signs of reduced stress (Coren, 2009).
