A little over two years ago, I started working as a Community Support Individual for Pathways Transition Programs LLC. My primary responsibility is to teach children various coping skills to manage their behavior, I have determined that I want to be able to address the emotions behind the behaviors. My desire is to be able to help the children I work with come to terms with their past histories so they can move on in their lives towards adoption and other positive outcomes. Sometimes, the children are still going through issues such as, on-going traumas, the lost of a parent due to death or incarceration, etc and I would like to develop the skill set to be able to address these issues. I see pursuing my degree through Argosy University as being the next step to take in order to develop a competency in counseling.

A career as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is a natural extension of my personal, educational, and research experiences. Although my path to nursing has not been a straight line, every experience that put me on this path has shaped my passion and dedication to psychiatric nursing. After losing loved ones to suicide at a young age, I made a promise to myself and to them that I would dedicate my life to helping individuals struggling with mental illness. This promise led me to study Psychology at UC Berkeley, where I fell in love with clinical research investigating the efficacy of treatments for mental illness.

I want to improve the lives of children with issues and help them find a person they can trust. The situation is not what really sparked the interest I have, it is the feelings I felt when seeing the cuts on my friend’s wrist. I do not want any child to have to feel that feeling. Seeing how she coped with her stress by harming herself, made me realize that this issue is common and many students cope with their stress in a similar way. Suicide rates amongst young teens are rising and I believe this is where school psychologist comes into play.

Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. The role of a counselor is to act as a conduit to change and wellbeing in a client.
It's not a perfect fit for my personality, I might change my mind or something my happen along the years, but it is something I find extremely important and interesting. Some of the things I will need to become a psychologist I will still need to work on, such as reading more and becoming more involved in people's lives, but I believe that with some effort I can be a good professional one day.
