Hi Dianna, I enjoyed the NYPH Psych Clinical Case Conference on 4/12/2017. It was a great idea to bring clinicians together to discuss a complex clinical case, which involved with different hospital services in the NYPH system. In the conference, although we were interested in discussing diagnosis and treatment, I wished that we had time to discuss about the effective ways of communication among services, such as the barriers they experienced regarding endorsement and adequate information transmission from one service to another. Also, I fully support the idea of getting other disciplines’ involvement in case conferences.

Dr. Michael Hogan discusses his research on approaches which would allow an adult with serious mental illness and children with severe emotional disturbance to live, work, learn, and participate fully in their community. It is very important to articulate that recovery is possible for individuals. The person in treatment has to have a strong belief that things are possible, in order to change. Another strength is for the counselor to focus on the positive aspect of the person in treatment for a better outcome.

As we were walking in the door of our dorm, we slipped into our pajamas and were getting ready to watch

According to the United States Department of Labor’s statistics, psychiatrists earn around $88 an hour and occupational therapists make around $36 an hour (Citation, 2014). I currently work in the mental health field as the Director of Admissions. I have worked in this field for ten years. Most of that time was spent in what is known as “direct care” and for five years I was in a management role. The work is very difficult with a very high turnover and burnout rate. One of the main issues within the industry is the loss staff, which is usually due to job dissatisfaction.
From the ideas and techniques that Mrs. Perez used, I realized how these interviews could be helpful if utilized and applied in the proper way. To me, this assignment was the best and it helped me further my development and growth as a future mental health counselor. The most interesting and educative aspect of this interview was how Mrs. Perez applied most of the counseling techniques, such motivational stage that we have been taught in class. Aspects such as paraphrasing the words of your clients, tone, and facial expressions are critical in a counseling session and students always overlook these techniques. The way Mrs. Perez employed according to her explanation was excellent and her ideas justified the importance of such points in any counseling session.
