Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Dorothy Thompson, American journalist and radio broadcaster, once said, “Only when we are no longer afraid do we begin to live”. People with PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, will in her eyes never live. Due to a traumatic event either in war, or just in their life, people suffer from a severe disorder of fear called PTSD. Many men that fought in the Vietnam War and suffered from PTSD when returning home from war. Lack of knowledge let the disorder cause damaging effects to many soldiers and their families. PTSD is a frightening disease developed after a traumatic experience, which can now be treated over time. First, PTSD is developed after a traumatic experience, often war-related. Reliving symptoms consist mainly of flashbacks, hallucinations, and nightmares. Avoiding symptoms include avoiding people, places, thoughts, and situations that remind the victim of the traumatic event. This often leads to isolation from friends and family. Increased arousal symptoms include excessive emotions, difficulty sleeping, irritability, anger, difficulty concentrating, and being “jumpy” or easily startled. The victim may also suffer from physical issues like high blood pressure and heart rate, rapid breathing, muscle tension, nausea, and diarrhea. Young children often suffer from delayed development of toilet training, motor skills, and language. PTSD can develop at any age, and 5.2 million people in the US develop it each year (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder). PTSD can be developed at any age and is more common in women than men.
