When reading Bernard Nietschmann’s, “Subsistence and Market: When the turtle Collapses” explains the effects of long term hunting of the green turtle in the Caribbean waters. He describes in depth the effects on the communities social and mental state as well as showing the effects of the influences of outside fisheries on the Miskito’s. The site of all this takes place in Caribbean waters of the coast of Nicaragua. The coast is a very abundant place for the Miskito.
Katherine Dettwyler is author of Dancing Skeletons: Life and Death in West Africa and an American Anthropologist. Her work for this book is specifically concentrated on her inquisitiveness for nutritional anthropology in malnourished West African children by researching health and infant cultural practices. She provides vivid descriptions and multiple vignettes of her personal fieldwork encounters with children in Mali, Africa. Diversified topics pertaining to ethnocentrism of are investigated and significant to understand in this particular study. Culture shock, child care, roles of both women and men in different societies, control of population, breastfeeding customs, and definitions of disability and mortality for children are included.
Elizabeth Cameron Dalman, is a renowned teacher, choreographer, director and performer who is known as the founder of modern dance in Australia; 1965 saw the Australian Dance Theatre open under Dalman, further cementing Australia’s respected position internationally on the dance stage (Australian Government, 2013). Modern or contemporary dance, is seen as similar to ballet with small elements from other styles of dance. The movements in contemporary dance are performed on the floor with less structure than the strict movements seen in ballet. In addition, dancers often perform in bare feet, further emphasizing the freedom this style of dance allows; performers emotions are expressed through movements (Bedinghaus, T. 2015). “Dance me Outside” by W. P. Kinsella tells the story of little Margaret Wolfchild, an eighteen year old Indigenous mother who is brutally murdered by Clarence Gaskell at the Blue Quills Dance Hall (21). The film by the same name attempts to convey a similar message, but there are key differences such as overlooking the Gaskell’s trial. The broader scope of film allows for the story to be told through multiple perspectives, aiding in rounding out the characters and providing them with a realistic dynamism. In her book “Iskwewak Kah Yaw Ni Wahkomakanak” Janice Acoose criticizes Kinsella’s portrayal of Indigenous women, particularly a character from a different story of Kinsella’s named Linda Starr (69). Powwows are celebrations that showcase Aboriginal music, dances, dance apparel, food and crafts. Powwow dances are beautiful expressions of indigenous spirituality, history and culture. Two of these dances that are performed both traditionally and competitively at powwows are the Hoop dance and the Jingle Dress dance. These dances have both similarities and differences that I will outline below. Both the Hoop dance and the Jingle Dress dance are performed by the Anishinaabe (Ojibwa origins), the third largest tribe in North America.

A sense of elitism has arisen within musical genes, stemming from rock, punk, folk, etc. believing that they are valid and true forms of music, but that due to the way disco is produced, it fails to be a genre. However, disco is much more than a genre- it is a whole unique culture that supports many marginalized identities. As Dyer states, ‘disco is also kinds of dancing, club, fashion, film, etc. – in a word, a certain sensibility’ (Dyer 20).
Guy Vanderhaeghe, author of “Dancing Bear”, explores both internal and external conflicts that man faces within society and within himself. Vanderhaeghe’s writing is intended to point out the importance and struggle of survival in literature. His work also presents the lives of those living troubled or dealing with a disability (Heath). The struggles of man versus man and man versus society are strongly spoken of within “Dancing Bear”. Vanderhaeghe describes a story of emotional battles of survival.
The male and female dancers, in Dark Matters choreographed by Crystal Pite, use movements throughout the dance that produce a visceral response from the audience. The performance begins with the two dancers partnering blissfully; they initiate their movements from the upper body and stay connected in some way. For these reasons one can conclude that the two dancers are comfortable, have a relationship with each other. The swaying section was brought to a complete stop when the woman collapses to the floor moving away from her partner. The man rushes over to her seeming to apologize to her, with a kiss.
Life is short. This statement is made by many but taken seriously by so few. The song “I Hope you Dance” by Lee Ann Womack , and more specifically the lyric “When you get the chance to sit it out or dance/I hope you dance” (8-9) describes the decision of living life to the fullest. Life will not stop for anyone or anything so why not live life with such caution. No one can make the rain stop so why does one choose to sit inside waiting for the storm to pass.
‘Flash Dance’(1983) dir. Adrian Lynn follows the story of Alex Owens, a young 18 year old welder who dreams of one day being able to join an elite group of ballet dancers. In comparison to, ‘West Side Story’ the narrative of ‘Flash Dance’ is one that concentrates on the women and how they control their bodies, the plot focuses on the passion and lustfulness in a relationship compared to previously mentioned filmed which concentrates on the love aspect of romance. ‘Flash Dance’ challenges the patriarchal system that Alex, as a woman, finds herself in.
Does anyone ever imagine what life would be like as a fish? Andrew Stanton tackles the task of bringing the events that happen underwater to life. Finding Nemo released in 2003 tells the story of a worrisome father who swore to protect his son after a tragic accident took away his wife and hundreds of other children. The father and a blue tang called Dory become a dynamic duo and form an awkward friendship on the journey to reacquire his only son Nemo.
As a performer, I’m constantly evaluating my strengths and weaknesses. There are a few areas I am confident in, however there is always room for improvement. In regards to my casting, I have the ability to play the strong and feisty female roles, and as a mezzo-soprano/belter, I can sing the songs that are generically written for this type of role. I am a very focused, and determined performer, particularly in a rehearsal setting. I am good at taking direction and willing to try new techniques and methods to see how they can further my training.
