Their role in this culture was like a dictatorship , they wanted things to go their way, which caused many humans to suffer from. William Bradford was the first person to write about thanksgiving with the Indians in the new world. He was one of the only one’s to write about this event which made a great impact to us knowing the knowledge of this favorite holiday: Thanksgiving. The puritans represented the poor society and how they rose up to fame, not in their time but a few hundred years later their work showed positivity in the light of negativity. In both Edward’s and Ann’s poems they show a great respect for God and in the belief of heaven.
Liberty was the key issue for the Puritans. It was liberty, or the lack of, that pushed men to find safe haven, and it was freedom that enticed them to create a new society that never put state and the church hand in hand. By having a taste of liberty, they were introduced to ideas of equality and democracy which became an important part of the community they built and to the future nation that they will create. The foundation of Puritan principles such as piety, democracy and republican freedom, spread its influence over all the colonies, enlightening the “whole American world”.
They wanted to create pure, moral Christian society based on moral living. By hard working, integration of religion in politics, and social development of certain lifestyle practices, Puritans had a large influence on the development of the New England colonies from 1630s through the 1660s. Puritans believed in hard work as the pathway of success since they thought they were favored by God to succeed (Doc I). They tried to shun idleness and believed that being lazy is not profitable (Doc C).
Religion played that of a great role in the colonial regions. This is so, as colonies, mostly in New England, the colonial settlers were actually driven by religious intolerance in England. In the Church’s view, Puritans represented a national security threat because their demands for cultural, social, and religious reforms undermined the king’s authority. Unwilling to conform to the Church of England, many Puritans found refuge in the New World.”
In 1630, the Puritans set sail for America. The Puritans established their own religion when they arrived in Boston. The Puritans believed that all sins must have a punishment. One common punishment was death and the other was carrying something for the rest of your life that symbolized the sin committed. Branding and banishment were also common punishments the Puritans believed in.
About a century later, during the 1630’s, the Puritans decided that the best way to reform was to emigrate away from the Church of England. Author David Hall claims “excitement ran high that a new kind of society was being created, a community without “the unclean conversation of the wicked” as Thomas Weld reported to his former parishioners in England.” They called this society “New England” and the puritans were one of the many religious movements able to escape to it, but their historical timing was in no way unique. The Puritans eventually realized that they’re next step was developing their society, shaping its system to fit their beliefs.
Through all the hardships optimism and hope were two of the most important characteristics a passenger would have to retain through both journeys; both slave and pilgrims had to believe that wherever the end up will be better than the ship they were on. A simple slip in these would quickly lead to the downfall of the traveler. Faith was another important quality and the Puritans had it strong and proud. Even in the hardest of times these people believed their lives were in the hands of God and if he wanted them to live then they would live; however, this idea of faith in God was much harder for the slaves to hold. How could a God who supposedly loves each person allow for such a cruel fate to fall upon someone?
The reason why the Puritans should be honored is that they established freedom by enforcing moral customs that keep cohesiveness in the colonies and eventually America. The Puritans established liberty because they gave all citizens a say in the government by taking on equal government positions rather than a hierarchy. In addition, the religion of the Puritans helped educate citizens about the moral standards that keep a society in a state of peace, which allows no infringing upon another's rights and establishes liberty. The Puritans found a land that was perfect because it allowed people to have equality and liberty which is carried out in today's society. The morality found in religion is also a great groundwork for establishing a democratic government because although politics wavers in belief, there is only one true way of being moral.
Puritans believed nothing was more important than education, because it would rear children properly and allow for their society to prosper and survive. ” … Puritans taught their children to read and write.” (Hollitz, Page 22) Learning to write gave children the ability to write diaries, letters, and many other writings which permitted them to express their feelings, keep notes, and learn. Reading was very important to Puritans and was heavily taught in schools, because it was “one chief project of that old deluder, Satan, to keep men from the knowledge of the Scriptures.”
The values that early American writers considered most important were piety, courage, and industry. They were highly honored by the large Puritan population, and these values helped them survive the beginning of the colonies. Overtime, however, different values were stressed more than others. For example, in “Of Plymouth Plantation,” written around 1620, Bradford chooses to write about the piety, courage, and industry of all the settlers in his settlement. In 1630, Winthrop gave his sermon “A Model of Christian Charity,” and in it he motivates his audience using piety and industry as reasons to succeed.
They were doing good and helping people out and setting a good example for others. They brought hope and joy and they shared and helped each other and they were kind. It it is good when the Puritans help people and it is cool how they share everything.
