Elizabeth I was Queen of England and Ireland from November 17, 1558 until she died on March 24, 1603. Elizabeth I was born at Greenwich Palace on September 7, 1533. She was named after her grandmothers Elizabeth Howard and Elizabeth of York. She was the second child in her family. Her father is Henry VIII of England. Anne Boleyn was Henry’s second wife. When Elizabeth was born she was the heir presumptive to the throne of England. Mary, her older half sister lost her position as a legitimate heir when her father Henry, annulled his marriage to Mary’s mother. Elizabeth was baptized on September 10, 1533. When Elizabeth was two years old her mother was beheaded on May 19, 1536. In 1533, Elizabeth’s half sister Mary was crowned. Then in 1554, Thomas Wyatt organized a rebellion against Mary. His goal was to make Elizabeth queen. His plot became uncovered and Mary quickly imprisoned Elizabeth. Elizabeth claimed she had no involvement in the plan, but her sister didn’t believe that. Thomas Wyatt was executed, however before he was he maintained that Elizabeth was not involved in his plan. Elizabeth was at last released and returned to Hatfield to continue her studies. Then in 1558, Elizabeth was ascended to the throne after Mary’s death. Elizabeth’s succession was a pressing issue. Throughout her reign she showed her talents. At this time Elizabeth still was not married. She had used her availability as a means to political ends, but she never agreed to marriage.
