Queen Victoria was an only child of Edward which was the Duke of Kent. Only eighteen years later in 1837 she ascended to the throne and became Queen over Great Britain and Ireland. Because she was so young, the Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne, served as her instructor pertaining to her political governing. It did not take long for Victoria to show her strength of mind which allowed her to adequately rule by her own power. A marriage in 1840 to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha resulted in nine children. Many would become important figures of the 20th century. The loss of Prince Consort, in December of 1861 drove her into a deep and dark depression. Her supervisory changed considerably from the time prior to the loss of Albert. This prolonged mourning engaged her for the rest of her life. It also played a role in the development of the soon to be Victorian mentality. She became one of Great Britain’s most well-known Queens, an outstanding ruler. Victoria witnessed the development in English politics and the expansion of the British Empire during her long reign. The queen was no more than five feet tall. Some people claim she had a 50-inch waist by the end of her rule.
