The question myself and Leona have chosen to discuss is ‘To what extent can the work of Quetin Tarentino be considered to be postmodern. Through our observation of Tarentino as both a writer and director we chose to discuss how Pulp Fiction can be considered a postmodern text.
Leona-
Post modernism is a 20th century concept that challenges social cultural norms. Postmodernism within film rejects the ideology that an one text is of a greater value than another. It is quite difficult to define what postmodernism is, but can be understood within film through the involvement of concepts such as fragmentation, the films structure and narrative and the concept of reality. Hyperreality blends together seamlessly what is real and what is fiction, there is no clear distinction between where one ends and one begins. Hyperreality also encourages audiences to rethink what they are watching, for example the scene of Vega when he’s high in his car, the way the shot is portrayed intensifies his high and the audience can physically see how high he is. But also its hard to tell if the car is actually moving or not, Tarentino cleverly uses hyperreality to blend together what is real and what is fiction in scenes like this. Tarentinos disruption of time and space throughout Pulp Fiction causes hyperreality which again causes the audience to rethink everything. In Butchs cab scene it doesn’t look like the car is moving but yet he still arrives home. Tarentino uses violence as a comedic device in Pulp Fiction, an experience is created that’s hyper realistic and because of this the audience doesn’t fully acknowledge the extreme nature of the violence. For example the scene where Vincent Vega accidently shoots Marvin in the face, even though someone is just after being shot and killed the scene itself is very comedic and
