In the novel Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson repeats the idea of feeling companionless and shielding oneself from harm. Throughout the text, Melinda, the main character feels like everyone is against her and she tries to put a stop to being harmed again. Even at times when she should be happier, such as when she is with friends, she doesn’t speak much and is withdrawn from everyone. On her first day of high school, at the very beginning of the text, Melinda compares high school to the jungle by calling herself “ a wounded zebra in a National Geographic special.” (Halse Anderson 5)
Extroverts can be some of the best people you meet. They have plenty to offer and thrive at the attention of others. However, being introverted can be just as great. In a society where being extroverted is the ideal, it can be very difficult to be an introvert. Susan Cain argues in her Ted Talk, “The Power of Introverts”, that introverts can share many brilliant ideas with the world and should be encouraged and celebrated for who they are.
In the article, Editorial: Program helps guide victims of assaults on road to recovery, by the Janesville Gazette, The Sexual Assault Recovery Program says only between 5 percent and 20 percent of victims report the attacks. In the novel Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda is the main character in the novel and is affected by sexual assault herself. Melinda is one of the 5 to 20 percent who stay silent after she was sexually assaulted by who Melinda calls “IT”, Andy Evans. Anderson uses trees as motifs to support the theme of how Melinda’s social life is as the school year progresses.
Susan Cain demonstrated in her book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts In a World That Can't Stop Talking, the ability of reserved, restrained people have to compared to those communicative people despite what many people believe. The author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts In a World That Can’ Stop Talking, Susan Cain started her career in “corporate law and consulting” (Lit Lovers). Cain studied at Princeton University and Harvard law. She worked many years in “corporate law and consulting” from working as an attorney to becoming the president of The Negotiation Company. After many years in this career field, Susan Cain left her career to become a writer within her home alongside her family.
In the story Quiet, by Susan Cain, she states the differences, effects, and changes that the culture of character and culture of personality made on society over time. The culture of character is different from the culture of personality. They’re different because the culture of character focuses on self identity and the culture of personality focuses on how others view you. The culture of character focuses on self identity.
"Quiet" by Susan Cain is a captivating book that delves into the world of introverts and their contributions to society. The book is a well-researched and thoughtful exploration of the power of introverts and the often-overlooked strengths that they bring to the table. Throughout the book, Cain draws on a wide range of examples from different fields, from business to education to politics, to demonstrate the value of introverts in a world that often favors extroverted personalities. One of the key themes that emerges in "Quiet" is the idea that introverts are not necessarily shy or anti-social, but rather that they simply prefer different types of social interactions.
For some, the idea that introvertism is just as powerful as extrovertism is difficult to compute because the argument is new to them or an existing belief is deeply grounded. A large majority of Cain’s anecdotes are of herself and of people she knows. When it comes to life events, it’s hard to deny that they’re fake. By providing these personal and authentic anecdotes, Cain displays that success through introvertism is very much
Amy Tan seems like an introvert. An extrovert probably would’ve been fuming yelling at her parents while trying to explain to them how they were embarrassing her. In the passage, Amy doesn’t tell her parents how embarrassed she was, in fact, it goes as far as to tell the reader,”I was stunned into silence for the rest of the night.” These traits show that she thinks before she act and are key in revealing that she is an introvert. Amy is a sensor.
Journal #2 I love to think of myself as a critically-thinking individual who comes to conclusions solely based on personal analyses of the world around me. In reality, I am largely a reflection of the cultures and spaces I occupy. The Cycle of Socialization by Bobbie Haro, defines socialization as “systematic training on how to beach of our social identities throughout our lives.” Thinking of my upbringing as something that is systemic sheds a different perspective on my realities. I was raised in a conservative, catholic, middle class family.
For me, it is more of a personal issue, because I know the struggles of being an introvert.. Based on the survey, 20% of the survey participants who identified themselves as extroverts, were actually introverted in some ways, without even realizing it. 30% of them gave me a confused look, which gave me the impression that they had no idea what the word meant. Contrary to what most people think, an introvert is not simply a person who is shy. In fact, being shy has little to do with being an introvert.
Cain ends her speech she emphasizes on three main points which do directly with what she was talking about. She reiterates her focus on what introversion is and defends it because not many people know what it is and may confuse it for shyness. She also ends on the note that not everyone is just either introvert or extrovert, she engages the audience to her conclusion because she lets us know that even if we are more extrovert than introvert, some part of us may be introvert. Her conclusion lets me know that her audience is not meant for only introverts or extroverts, it is meant for anyone who has ever felt shy or misunderstood for wanting to be alone from time to time. It is meant for those people who may be outgoing and may not understand why other people are not like them.
“Susan Cain so effectively showed the world in her book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, introverts can be warm, interested in others, and powerful in their own right” (Whitbourne, 2014). Being inclined towards being introverted will come in handy when I am trying to create solutions for the computer problems, but I need to also be able to converse
In ‘Just be Yourself’ the author explains that you never know what the future holds, that it’s okay to be an outsider, and finding out who you really are. Stephanie Pellegrin tells herself to not be so insecure and that by spending so much time trying to find herself she’s slowly losing herself. She is saying that she needs to stop caring so much about others opinions because that’s distracting her from finding out who she really is. I am also like this and thankful I’m less like that than last year.
The short story "Just Be Yourself" by Stephanie Pellegrin tells the story of a girl named Lily who faces the pressure to fit in with her new high school friends. She likes being unique and independent, but when she starts high school, everyone seems the same. Her best friend even starts to change her looks and personality to fit in. Lily is confused and feels like she has to decide between fitting in or being true to herself.
For my essay I am choosing the topic of introverts and online education. This topic is relevant for both my area of study, and my professional field. I am an introvert, which does not infer shyness or timidness. It means that I do not gain as much insight into learning topics when in a group as I would in private. I value group discussions and the unique perspective that people provide, I use those insights along with my own to enhance my work both scholastically and professionally when I am alone.
