Quilotoa’s name was derived from 2 Quechua words “Quiru” meaning tooth and “toa” meaning queen. Legends are part of Ecuador’s culture and ancestral traditions. Local legend says the King of Volcanos, Quilotoa, lived on the surface of the lagoon. His arch nemesis, Toachi, the King of the Pacific lived beneath the lagoon. King Quilotoa loathed King Toachi because he always wandered into his realm. One day King Quilotoa threw a lightning bolt at King Toachi to force him leave. Toachi hurtled a fireball back and the two kings battled until the landscape was destroyed and barren. Only the crater remained and they say this is how Volcano Quilotoa got its shape.
