3. A blind person in literature can see the world and what’s happening in a whole new way, whether it’s what he can’t see or what he can. For example, in “Oedipus Rex”, the blind man can see the true king and what he truly is, but the question is it because the author thought a blind man seeing the true king would be good for the story or because the blind man can’t see the king’s mask (i.e. his clothes and wealth). When Amir fought Assef, most of Amir;s body was getting beat up except for one part, his eyes. During the whole fight, Assef hit his stomach and face, only hitting below Amir’s eye once. One punch to Amir’s eye and he would’ve become blind in one eye or both, but he can still see for a reason, because he saw terrible things, but Assef couldn’t allow Amir to unsee what he did to Hassan. You see, since Assef was Amir’s childhood bully, he also beat up Hassan, who always stood up for Amir and with Assef being the bully, he couldn’t allow Amir to unsee and forget what he saw happen to Hassan. Foster mentioned that every story takes place in a specific location for a reason, like in “The Old Man and the Sea”. This story could’ve easily taken place in the Caribbean, but it chose to be around or in Cuba. Foster said this was important because of Cuba’s culture, poverty, corruption, and fishing. All these traits are specific to Cuba, which made “The Old Man and the Sea” the way it was. Also, notice how all stories send characters south, this is because the places South are more easily abused and corrupted. If a character went North of the U.S. they would run into more security and less corruption and finally, the South has more farms which opens up more jobs that are more susceptible to be toyed with by the
