From The Sayings of Epictitus: “The reason why I lost my lamp was that the thief was superior to me in vigilance. He paid however this price for the lamp, that in exchange for it he consented to become a thief: in exchange for it, to become faithless.” This sentence tells you that a person has lost their lamp to a vigilant thief. Before this theft the man who stole the lamp was not considered a thief, but just a man. We don’t know his character before the theft, but we do know that after he stole the lamp he became a criminal. The thief thought that by stealing the lamp he wouldn’t have to pay the price of the lamp and be able to keep it without any consequences.
