Women and Men Although men and women are two different sexes, neither should be held to different standards or expectations. A quote from the book says, “A girl should not expect special privileges because of her sex, but neither should she “adjust” to prejudice and discrimination. She must learn to compete… not as a woman, but as a human being.” We are all human, and the quote suggests that women should have equal opportunities to anything that a man does. A person’s race, gender, ethnicity, or religion should never deter their equal opportunity. In the selection “The Passionate Shepherd To His Love” a shepherd is confessing his love to a woman and offering her everything under the sun, just for her to take his hand and to live with him. The selection says, “you fit into me / like a hook into an eye / a fish hook / an open eye.” This selection could possibly mean two things, either a good men, or not at all depending how literal one views it. A fish hook that is literally in a person’s open eye doesn’t seem like an ideal fitting. Whereas if it is viewed like a fish hook in an open eye, such as an open eye on the fishing pole, then that is representative of a perfect fit. “How Do I Love Thee” selection is about a woman who loves a man to the deepest extremes and with the purist form of love. A quote from the selection says, “I love thee to the depth and breadth and height / My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight / For the ends of being and ideal grace.” The quote implies that she loves him more than she could ever love herself or anything period.
