In the book Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, the main character, Clay Jensen, changes throughout the story due to his experience through the tapes that Hannah left. Before Clay listened the tapes, he displayed a numerous amount of good traits such as innocent and hard working. As Asher states on page 6 when Clay has just received the shoe box of tapes, “Who would send me a shoebox full of audio tapes? No one listens to tapes anymore. Do I even have a way to play them?” This shows that Clay is confused about who sent him the audio tapes because nobody uses them any more. He can’t think of any reason why someone would sent them to him. It also shows that he is innocent because he wasn’t expecting them and is skeptical about them. Just as Asher states on page 7, “No, I can’t believe it. Hannah Baker killed herself. I hope your ready, because i'm about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended.” Hannah recently commited suicide but Clay hears her voice on the tapes. Clay is shocked that hannah, who not that long ago, took her life was the one talking. He is also shocked that he is hearing her voice once again. Another thing that is stated on page 197, when Clay is about to listen to the tape that he is mentioned in, “Because it’s about you clay...The next tape is about you. Nothing. My heart doesn’t jump. My eyes don’t flinch. I don’t breathe. And then. I snap my arm back, elbow into the seat. Then I smash it into the door and I want to pound my head sideways into the window” (Asher 197). This shows that Clay doesn’t believe that he is on theses tapes because he thinks he didn’t do anything wrong. He doesn’t know why he would be on them. He was fine listing to the others but when it was his turn he freaked
