In Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein the protagonist, Victor Frankenstein, was raised by loving, affluent parents. Victor’s parents, Alphonse and Caroline, were examples of quintessential parents. Both Alphonse and Caroline took parenting responsibilities very serious, acting as patriarchal figures and instilling superb morals upon their children. Unfortunately, Victor played a contrasting role to Alphonse, as he failed to possess any positive paternal traits. The monster’s lack of nurturing and guidance led him down a wretched path of violence and evil. The monster’s cruelty could have been avoided if Victor had initially taken responsibility for his actions. Victor obsessed over surpassing former scientific limitations and achieving a sense of superior intellect. Unfortunately, Victor’s curiosity and desire to know more was dangerous. Victor tampered in an abnormal area, which he should not have ventured into. He attempted to play God, and paid the ultimate price for it. Victor’s inability to think beyond the scope of his mania left him unprepared for the result of his actions. He gave life to a being without considering the possible consequences and liabilities of creating a life. Oppose to taking on the responsibilities of being the conceptual parent-figure to the monster, Victor abandoned him. It is hard to pinpoint the cause of this, but it is safe to assume modern day tolerance makes it more acceptable for parents to abandon their kid. Today, there are countless organizations designed to help neglected children. These organizations seem to be a way for adults to pass the buck. An adult is able to have a baby without considering the consequences, because they are aware they can sign the child over to these organizations.
