Rabies Vaccination Report

863 Words4 Pages

The topic of this report is the explanation of how the rabies vaccine works to fight against certain pathogens. This report will consist of a detailed description of the historical review of the vaccine, also explaining the summary of how the vaccination is prepared. The structure of the rabies virus is explained to understand how the vaccine will fight against the pathogens presented on an infected cell.
The rabies virus was discovered to be one of many human diseases founded by Girolamo Francastoro, a 16th century Italian physician. The structure of the rabies virus was a RNA virus that consisted of genomes that encoded five proteins (N, P, M, G, and L), also the arrangement of these proteins determined the structure of the rabies virus. …show more content…

(Bio-Louis 2015) The vaccine was developed in France during the late 1800s. Pasteur looked for the development of the vaccine because he wanted to explore a more difficult area of human diseases. The disease was a major ethical issue within the 1800s because of the not knowing which microorganisms were causing the rabies virus. The development of the vaccination was found through experimentation on monkeys primarily and then through rabbits, after both experimentation proved to be successful he introduced the vaccination towards canines and humans. The vaccination was founded by Pasteur through monkeys and rabbits after injecting them with an attenuated strain of the rabies virus. The vaccination was proven to be successful towards humans when a nine-year-old was bitten by a rabid canine, and was treated on July 6, 1885. (Heritage 2013) The procedure was performed through an injection in the arm. The vaccination that was injected was created through pasteurization of the rabies virus. The process of pasteurization is when the bacteria is heated to kill the infectious disease and then controlled once the bacteria is cooled. The controlled bacteria are then safe to inject towards humans and …show more content…

The website article by Medline explains that the “vaccination should be given to people or animals exposed to wildlife not in a controlled environment”. This was discussed because of the findings that the rabies virus is highly found within animals not vaccinated. The CDC explain that being vaccinated will help the humans’ immune system prepare to fight against the viral infection. The procedure explained by a health documentation explains three doses to patients not exposed to the virus. The first dose is given as a pre-exposure when a human is an infant around three months, second dose is given seven days after exposer to the first dose, and the third is given after twenty-one days. (Medline 2009) There is also a procedure given to patients that has already been exposed to and this requires an additional does of the vaccination. The reason for the fourth dose is because the first dose is given immediately after being diagnosed with rabies, but the first dose is combined with another injected called Rabies Immune Globulin. (Medline 2009) The rabies immune globulin (HRGI) is injected into the infected area. The dose will then infiltrate the around the wounded area. Once the infection is exposed and express by HRGI then the immune system reacts and MHC class I signals NK-cells within our innate system and this will then rid the body of the rabies virus over a course of seven
