The CLACS series lecture talk by Gladys L. Mitchell-Walthour tackled the topic of economic perception and racial discrimination in Brazil. Mitchell-Walthour hypothesized that Afro Brazilians who have been racially discriminated against will have a more pessimistic outlook on their economic situation than those who have not dealt with racial discrimination. Additionally, this quota system has been put in place for civil services, to employ Afro Brazilian workers. Due to the introductions of these social policies, approximately 22 million Afro Brazilians have escaped extreme poverty. While it has been a much improvement, the Afro Brazilian community is only entering the lower middle class. This increased middle class allows the upward trend in the purchases of consumer goods. While there are improvements, the sentiment of the Afro Brazilian still varies. In class, this was presented in how some say that racial discrimination is only social discrimination. The differing views on what to consider racial consideration can greatly alter the data. 31% of the Afro Brazilians surveyed saw that there is no improvement in social disparity while 29% saw a beneficial effect on social disparity by the economic mobility. Additionally, 27% could not be sure on the improvement of social disparity. This sentiment may vary based on the treatment of the community by the still dominant white class. For example, the treatment of Afro Brazilians will vary based on many variables so it is hard to track the social disparity
