In O’Grady’s essay Olympia’s Maid: Reclaiming Black Female, O’Grady criticizes the subordination of black female subjects in art. Culturally, art has constructed the identity of black females to be inferior compared to their white counterparts. As a consequence, viewers objectify black female bodies and tend to ignore the subject all together.

The authors are Joyce Appleby, Alan Brinkley, and James McPherson, all of whom have PhDs. Appleby was a professor and historian at UCLA before she passed away. The story “Red Queen” by Victoria Aveyard is a very symbolic and intriguing novel. Theauthor uses blood, something every living person must have, to draw a line between people. Queen Elizabeth was in the center of a romantic scandal leaving her the only queen who never married. Many characters fit the ideas we may have of what a person living in the late 1600s would be like but they are given additional qualities that make some of their actions understandable to the modern reader. I doubt that I would be able to capture the manipulative energy Abigail gives off though I might fit her profile based solely on some of my appearance. And while I would certainly be able to make a wonderful John Proctor, it is more likely that I would be cast instead as the less adulterous of the Proctors.

Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.
