Reported in December of 2014, there were seventeen incidents of racism in sports; from the recorded results, six of the cases were from basketball. Racism is an intense issue across America in multiple settings of our society today. It occurs currently and in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA) throughout many aspects of the sport, and in some cases, racism may be hidden from fans and supporters. Racism or what the millennials refer to as hating, most times can depend on an individual’s inane ability to affect another race or person that is oppressed. Michael Jordan is a component of the solution to this problem, when he admitted his own racism against Caucasians. He admits his bitter past and wants to show that even superstars have histories in substantial societal issues. Furthermore, athletes in the NBA are speaking out on racial issues and making public displays during basketball games. Recently, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Derrick Rose, Kyrie Irving and others wore “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirts during a pre-game warm-up to put a focus on a past court case of Racism, involving Eric Garner, an African American. Additionally, Kevin Durant wrote “Black Lives Matter” on his game shoes before a nationally televised game.
Ultimately, racism should be eradicated from the NBA and taken control of this popular issue in today 's society. In retrospect, racism in the NBA needs to be fought and managed so that in the future, racism will be eliminated from the NBA as a whole. Leagues must address this problem forcefully and effectively, in order to eliminate intolerance and encourage diversity throughout the sport of basketball.
