The film “Trumbo” displays a diversity of issues that are still relevant in today’s world. This film engages viewers to compare issues in the 1950’s and how those same issues have resurfaced or have never gone away. The first issue displayed in the film “Trumbo” is racism. In the film it is clear that Nikola Trumbo fought against the idea of racism against black people. The film didn’t show too many scenes concerning racism but it still gave an insight about how racism was in the 1950’s. Racism is still a huge issue in today's society. Racism today has caused tremendous moral, cultural, and economic suffering to some countries, it has also fueled police brutality and people’s hate for the other skin tone. Propaganda itself is a huge issue due to the fact that the media is able to control and manipulate information in order to influence the thoughts of individuals. In the film famous people from Hollywood often gave talks and their perspective on communism in a negative way. This was done so people would despise communism and despise people who support the idea of communism. An example of propaganda from the film was in the beginning when Trumbo and his family went to a newsreel. At the newsreel, the work of Hedda Hopper, a columnist, depicted communists like Trumbo and his associates, to have a destructive nature and have a common goal; ‘world domination’. It told everyday citizens that communists are horrible people and/that want to dominate the world and start wars. Nowadays the media is being manipulated and being used as propaganda. We tend to think of North Korea as a country where there is a dictatorship, people are getting tortured, or even that the people in North Korea are just horrible people. All of this information would be verified or invalidated if we had a proper source for the information, but we don’t.
